After
travelling the world for more than ten years tour veteran Barbara Schett
still rates Australia as one of her favourite stops. She chats with
Evonne Barry.
You're scheduled to play the last match of the day. How do you
fill in your time?
I like to sleep in, then get to the courts and warm up. I might then
go back to the hotel and read, or something like that, before I go back to
play my match.
What do you do when visiting a city for the first time?
I like to see the sights the city's famous for, as well as find some good
restaurants to eat at during the week.
Growing up, did you model yourself on anybody?
No, I always wanted to build my own personality to become someone that
could be a model for others.
Are you superstitious?
No, I'm not superstitious, on or off the court.
Who would you most like to meet?
I'd love to meet the Dalai Lama, to see whether he's as interesting and
inspiring as he seems.
What are the best and worst features of your personality?
I think I'm a pretty nice, very positive and happy person. On the
other hand, sometimes I'm too nice and can get taken advantage of.
Who is the funniest player on the tour?
Besides me?! I think that would have to be Iva Majoli. She's crazy,
but very funny at the same time.
What do you never leave home without?
I always travel with my CD collection. I couldn't live without my
music!
Other than Austria, in which country do you feel most at home?
I think Australia. The people are so, so friendly. Even though
it's very different compared to Austria, I feel very welcome and
comfortable there.
Most memorable off-court experience?
There are too many to name just one - I have a great life and really
appreciate the experiences I've had.
When was the last time you cried?
Over a year ago, but why is my business!
Favourite movie?
I'd have to say Life is Beautiful, I never get tired of watching that
movie.
Who is the male player you most admire?
I think it would have to be Arthur Ashe. He did so much for tennis.
Your biggest indulgence?
Definitely shoes! I probably have over 200 pairs, including my
tennis shoes.
What is your first memory?
Hmmm.... I think it's hiking in the mountains. I was always whining
and wanting to go home!
How many languages do you speak?
Two - German
and English.
Your most unusual training technique?
I have some eye and vision exercises which I guess are pretty unique.
Do you play better when the crowd is for or against you?
Oh, for sure when they're for me. I get really pumped up when I have
a lot of support from the crowd.
Who is your favourite sports person, outside of tennis?
Like a lot of other people, Lance Armstrong. What he's had to
overcome and the fact he's still at the top of his sport is truly amazing.
And your biggest regret?
Some personal decisions I've made.
