After three days of enjoyable celebrity
tennis, two WTA Tour professionals took to the court at the TD Centre and put on
a display of world-class tennis.
Toronto's Sonya Jeyaseelan and Austria's
Barbara Schett played a half-hour exhibition match for the lunchtime crowd in
the heart of Toronto's financial district. Although Jeyaseelan vowed revenge
after Austria defeated Canada in Fed Cup action in July, Schett was victorious,
winning the mini-set 4-3.
Even though it was billed as a "friendly
exhibition," there was plenty of trash talking. Jeyaseelan asked Schett, "Why
are you wearing pants? Did you think there was going to be snow in Toronto?"
Schett was quick to respond, "No, I knew
that I didn't need to wear shorts to play against you," implying it would be an
easy victory.
This match capped off the week-long Tennis
in the Streets festival, which brought large crowds from the surrounding office
towers. Schett said she had a good time.
"I didn't look at this like it was a
practice, but I will practice later on,"
Schett said. "It's fun to play in front
of this kind of crowd. It is good publicity for tennis."
