The opening game contains a superb rally between the baseliners, which Capriati wins at the net with a forehand passing shot. But two long shots gives Schett break point. Capriati takes the game to deuce. Capriati saves four break points before finally winning the opener.

Schett wins her game comfortably as Capriati fails to find her usually reliable forehand shot.

Capriati forces Schett to make a number of unforced errors to take the third, with little trouble.

Schett pushes her American opponent all around the court with some well-angled ground strokes. The Austrian wins her game comfortably.

Schett wins yet another break point on the Capriati serve, but the American saves the point yet again with a deep forehand. After a tussle at deuce the American comes through.

Capriati wins her game as Schett begins to feel the pressure.

Capriati races to a 40-15 lead, but double faults on her first match point and then plays a bad forehand. She hands Schett advantage but saves the game with a deuce. Nerves start to creep in and she gifts Schett the game with a double fault.

Capriati grabs match point on Schett's serve as the Austrian feels the pressure to hold on. A double fault hands the number two seed the match.
