Barbara Schett legt eine Regenerationspause ein und verzichtet auf ein Antreten in der kommenden Woche in Doha. Der Grund sind Achillessehnen-Beschwerden, die ihr schon seit Paris zu schaffen machen.

Dort gewann Österreichs Nummer eins zwar Mitte Februar mit Patty Schnyder dank Schmerztabletten und Tapeverband noch das Doppel-Finale, doch zuletzt wurden diese Probleme immer ärger, weshalb sie auch in der Qualifikation von Dubai ausschied.

"Wir haben diese Beschwerden von der WTA-Therapeutin behandeln lassen, doch ist es nicht besser, sondern am Ende sogar noch schlechter geworden. Da jeder schnelle Schritt mit Schmerzen verbunden war, wäre unter diesen Umständen ein Antreten in Doha wertlos gewesen", berichtete Trainer Gerald Mandl, der mit Schett nach Österreich zurückgekehrt ist.

Nächster Auftritt für Indian Wells geplant

Weit wichtiger ist Schett ein Antreten bei den nächsten großen Turnieren in Indian Wells (10.3.) und Miami, wo sie fixe Startplätze im Hauptfeld hat.

"Im Hinblick darauf wollten wir nichts riskieren", sagt Mandl, dessen Schützling sich am Montag in Innsbruck einer Computer-Tomografie unterzieht. Danach ist eine Therapie geplant.

Wenn alles normal verläuft, wird Schett am 7. März zu ihren nächsten Einsätzen in den USA fliegen.
