Myriam
Casanova, a Swiss qualifier who is just 17 years old and playing in her
first Grand Slam, eliminated the 29th seed, Barbara Schett of Austria,
in chilly, windy conditions on Court 3. It was easily the finest victory
of her young career for Casanova, who is a member of the Swiss Fed Cup
squad.
The vastly-experienced Schett, aged 26 and playing her eighth Wimbledon,
never managed to impose her greater height and experience on the
highly-promising Casanova, who gave indication of what may be in store
when she qualified for her first WTA tournament in Budapest and then
went all the way to the final.
Ending last year ranked 340, she has improved to 180 and is certain to
go much higher as a result of her Wimbledon progress.
In the first and third sets, Schett wasted numerous break points. She
lost the first set in 29 minutes. Six more break points were missed by
the Austrian in the second set before she managed to capture the Swiss
girl's serve to take a 5-3 lead and serve out to level the match.
Casanova had dropped just 13 games in her three qualifying matches and
her current excellent form on grass proved too much for Schett in the
deciding set, when she raced into a 3-0 lead and then extended it to
5-1.
The lone blip came when she served for the match but was broken. At the
next time of asking, Casanova was calm, confident and victorious 6-3,
3-6, 6-3 in one hour and 24 minutes.
