What's your best career achievement?
Definitely getting into the top ten. Last year it was a big thrill
when I beat Venus Williams (in the first round of the French Open).
What are your goals for 2002?
I want to get into the top ten again.
Who do you most like to play?
Anybody I beat!
What is your favourite tournament?
My favourite tournament is definitely the Australian Open.
Does
that make Melbourne your favourite city?
Yes, I love Melbourne.
What's the best thing about being on tour?
I like travelling. I like being at different places and meeting
different people. You get to know different people, the way they
live and a bit of culture and everything.
Has your success in doubles helped your singles?
I think so. I definitely feel a lot of confidence especially if I
lose early (in a tournament) then I can continue playing doubles.
It's like a practice match. I think if it is not too tiring for
me, it's great to also play doubles in a tournament.
What do you think of the initiatives such as best of three tiebreaker
system in mixed doubles?
I think it's good - for me, otherwise I wouldn't play mixed doubles
because I'd get too tired. It's a matter of luck sometimes with
that third set, but I think it's better that it's not too long.
How did you feel when you were voted second most sexy tennis player
behind Anna Kournikova on Playboy.com?
Well, I was very honoured but for me nothing changed. I tried to
play well and be in the newspapers because of my tennis.
Do you enjoy the glamour side of your job?
It come with playing tennis. Of course we have to get used to
it. Sometimes it's nice, sometimes it gets a little bit on your
nerves.
Do
the fans ever become too much?
Sometimes you are really tired and you don't really want to sign
autographs but you have to sign autographs because otherwise they say
things like 'you are cocky' or this and that. They don't really
understand sometimes that when you are warming up and just about to play
a match that you can't spend 20 minutes signing autographs. You
have to learn how to deal with and sometimes you have to say 'No, it's
too much'. I always try to do everything though.
Is it something that's become easier or harder as you've become more
well-known?
No, easier. Harder because there's more fans but easier to say
'no' because now I'm older and I know what's good for me and I know when
I have to say no.
Are you pleased to have been a part of the boom in women's tennis?
Of course. Tennis is the No.1 women's sport in the world right now
and I'm very happy to be participating in that sport. I think
people now love to watch it. The ratings are great, so I'm just
happy to be part of it.
Did
you know?
- Schett caused a major upset when she defeated Venus Williams in the
first round of the French Open last year - a result she still recalls as
one of the best in her career. 'I was feeling great out there when
I won the last point, like everything was wonderful, the feeling was
really great, really happy. It's hard to describe that
feeling. It's unbelievable.' she said.
- Schett's best Grand Slam result is reaching the quarter-finals of the
1999 US Open.
- At Wimbledon last year, Schett signed a $50,000 deal to endorse a
British tabloid - a decision she came to painfully regret. As the
new glamour girl of tennis, Schett faced unbearable media attention with
many stories containing exaggerations and blatant lies. 'It was a
mistake' Schett says of the experience now. 'I was too naive and
it was a learning experience. Hopefully I will know how to handle
it next time'.
- Despite living in a country that focuses more on winter sports ('They
put you on skis in Austria when you can walk'), Schett has always loved
tennis. She says her parents , who still play socially in Austria,
introduced her to the sport.
